A hospital discharge, a first visit or a baby shower – and suddenly you’re standing in front of a shelf with a thousand pastel things. Everything is adorable. But which ones will actually get used, and which will stay in the box with the tag still on? 🎁

The good news: a great gift isn’t about a big budget, it’s about a little thought. Here’s how to make it easy.

The short answer: Choose useful things that get used every day: nappies in a bigger size, muslin cloths, clothes for 6–12 months or a voucher. Skip cot bumpers, sleep positioners, nests and pillows, which don’t match safe sleep advice.

Pretty or practical? (It can be both)

New parents get mountains of 0–3 month clothes, and babies outgrow them in weeks. That’s why practical almost always wins. Ask yourself one question: “Will this be used every day?”

  • If the answer is “yes” – excellent choice.
  • If it’s “only for a photo” – lovely, but pair it with something useful.
  • If you’re not sure – go a size up, for example clothes for 6–12 months.

What not to give, however cute it is

Here, safety is a must-have filter. The Lullaby Trust, the UK charity for safer baby sleep, doesn’t recommend cot bumpers, sleep positioners, “nests” (soft pads with raised sides) or pillows in the place where a baby sleeps. They look cosy, but they don’t match safe sleep advice.

One more note: the NHS, the UK’s national health service, points out that the cot mattress and the car seat are the things that really should be new. If you’re thinking of giving one of these, agree on the model with the parents first.

💡 BabyVita tip

If you’re giving a sleep product, look on the packaging or the manufacturer’s website for a stated European safety standard. None listed? Pick another gift – there’s plenty to choose from.

Ideas by budget (roughly)

Prices vary from shop to shop, so treat these ranges as a rough guide only.

Up to about €25

  • A pack of nappies in a bigger size (2 or 3) – they’ll definitely come in handy.
  • Muslin cloths – for wiping, for covering up in the pram, for everything.
  • Bodysuits and sleepsuits for 6–12 months.
  • A soft book with high-contrast pictures.

About €25–75

  • Fitted cot sheets (2–3 of them) – you always need a spare.
  • A sleeping bag for the season, with no hood and with armholes.
  • Hooded towels.
  • A voucher for a pharmacy or baby shop. Sounds boring, but it’s never wasted.

Over €75

  • A group gift from several friends towards a bigger purchase the parents choose themselves.
  • Nappies for a few months ahead.
  • A service: a home clean or ready-made meals delivered for the first few weeks.

What if you don’t know the parents well?

Then go for neutral, “timeless” things: nappies in a bigger size, a voucher, a book. And if they’re close to you – just ask. What matters more to you: surprising them or getting it right? Both are fine, but the second is easier.

The gift nobody thinks of

Time. Offer to cook, walk the dog or take the baby for an hour so mum can have a shower in peace. It’s free, and it’s often the one remembered longest. ❤️

💡 BabyVita tip

Instead of guessing, ask: “What would help you most right now?” Most parents are grateful for the question – and for not receiving their fifth identical rattle.

For the dads

If you’re the dad and everyone keeps asking “what can we get you?”, keep a short list on your phone. You’ll avoid duplicate gifts – and awkward exchanges at the shop counter.

In short

Useful, safe and what the family actually needs beats “the cutest thing on the shelf”. One good question and a bit of common sense – and your gift will be spot on. You have a feel for this, so trust it. 😊
