Going out with a baby can feel like a small expedition. You want everything to hand, but you don’t want to drag half the nursery to the park.

The good news: after a few outings you’ll know exactly what you need. Until then, here’s a practical list to start from – and to remix to suit you.

What are the must-haves?

  • Nappies: a common rule of thumb is one nappy for every 1–2 hours out – plus one spare “just in case”.
  • Baby wipes: for little bottoms, hands, faces and the park bench.
  • Nappy cream – a small tube is plenty.
  • Changing mat – a foldable one, so you don’t have to wonder what’s been on that bench.
  • Spare clothes: one bodysuit and a pair of socks. Leaks have impeccable timing.
  • Bags for dirty clothes and used nappies.
  • Hand sanitiser – for after changes when there’s no soap and water.

What about feeding?

That’s entirely up to you. If you’re breastfeeding, you often just need a bib and a thin muslin or scarf. If you’re using formula – a clean bottle, pre-measured formula powder in a dispenser and a flask of water prepared according to the instructions on the pack. For older babies – a spoon, a bib and a light snack.

And a bottle of water for you. Seriously.

💡 BabyVita tip

Restock the bag as soon as you get home, not just before the next outing. That way you’ll never discover an empty pack of wipes at exactly the worst moment. 😉

What to add for the season

  • Summer: a hat with a brim, a light cotton muslin and shade. The NHS, the UK’s health service, advises keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight, and for older babies, using sunscreen with SPF 50 or more that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Winter: a spare hat, mittens, a small blanket.
  • Rainy weather: a breathable rain cover for the pushchair.

The little extras that save the day

  • A favourite toy or dummy (and a case for it).
  • A charged phone and a little cash.
  • Your baby’s documents, if you’re going to the doctor.
  • A mini first-aid kit: plasters and whatever your paediatrician has recommended for your baby.

Which bag should you choose?

Backpack, shoulder bag or one that clips onto the pushchair? Ask yourself:

  • If you often carry your baby in a carrier → a backpack keeps your hands free.
  • If you’re mostly out with the pushchair → handlebar hooks or the basket underneath are great. Just be careful a heavy bag on the handle doesn’t tip the pushchair backwards.
  • If you love being organised → look for lots of inside pockets or use small see-through pouches.

How to find everything one-handed

Organise the bag into “zones”: everything for changing in one pouch, everything for feeding in another, your own stuff in a separate pocket. When there’s a crying baby in one arm, you won’t be digging to the bottom – you’ll just pull out the whole pouch. And check the contents every few weeks: babies grow fast, and that spare bodysuit may have quietly become too small.

For the dads

Keep your own mini kit in the car or your backpack: two nappies, wipes, a bodysuit. If someone leaves the main bag on the bench in the hallway, you become the hero of the day.

In short

There’s no perfectly packed bag – only one that works for you. If you forget something one day, you’ll improvise and laugh about it later. Head out with confidence – the world outside is waiting for you. 🌿
